Let's all eat trafe for Chanukah!

A holiday scene:

The Place: Balducci's, today.
Personae: Me, shopping for low-carb food.
Action: I'm sort of staring at the meat display, lots of salamis and sausages, and then various hams. And the hams' price signs have all been tagged with festive PERFECT FOR CHANUKAH banners. Which I blinked at for a couple of secs, trying to decide if this was an example of truly monumental cluelessness or ... nah. It's just the Department of Monumental Cluelessness, Well-Meaning Division.

Photos taken at the Balducci's on 8th Ave at 14th Street, on Sunday, 12/2.

Update: As of Tuesday morning 12/4, the hams are now tagged with green "Perfect for the Holidays!" signs.

By Popular Demand: If you're tickled by the Ham for Chanukah pic, visit my store at cafepress.com, where you can get it on a mug, or on greeting cards (stock up now for next year!).

You hypocrite! Your blog has a photo of YOUR bacon and egg breakfast. Stop eating traife and people might take you seriously.

I never said I don't eat pork -- I eat it daily.
I just think it's hilarious that a food shop in Manhattan would promote ham as a Chanukah product.

Okay, I came over to laugh at the whole thing, but that anon comment above made me laugh even *harder*. You hypocrite!

Why are 80% of the people commenting here anon? Is ham for Hanukkah really *that* controversial?

I'm such a hypocrite! I was SURE no one would notice that bacon in the next post! I'm totally snagged!

Actually, the anonymous commenting is because this post is linked on gothamist.com today, which is bringing non-LJers, and they can only comment anonymously.

I mean, they could SIGN their posts, but mostly they're not.

Aha! I have made the connection with who you are (okay, xanphibian made it for me), which explains the link I followed here in the first place :)

At least it wasn't bacon wrapped around scallops...

You've also made Don Surber's blog as well.
I've got an old boss in my I can hear laughing at this.
He used to ask, as he was about to eat his soul food from across the street of the business, "This Smothered Pork Chop is kosher. Right?".
Not an orthodox man by any body's imagination.
It was great food though...a chop in red beans and rice. . . yum

"your" is possessive, eg: your house or your car; "YOU'RE" is the correct contraction of YOU + ARE, eg: You're correct!

Why pork was proscribed by Hebraic law is still unclear, and some scholars believe that the Torah merely suggested not eating pork at certain restaurants. /Woody Allen

well, if the great talmudic sage, Rabbi Woody Allen shlita, says so, it must be true.
maybe its a mitzvah to marry your shiksa step daughter, as well.

In the voice of Homer Simpson, "Oooh. Shiksa step-daughter." Also, "Oooh. Ham."

This is marketing baby! As long as the store thinks it found niche worth exploring it will go for that niche, even if it means promoting Chanukah in New York.

I suspect it was a deliberate joke. But who knows?
